Photo shoot on fabled waters

Thanks to the long history and the foresight of some very avid outdoorsmen and philanthropists we had the opportunity to take photos at what is known as Railroad Ranch.  It is actually a large property that was owned by railroad moguls beginning in the early 1900's and held by various wealthy investors over the decades until some of the property was donated as a state park to the state of Idaho.  It is now known as Harriman Ranch.  You can learn more about this gorgeous property here.

After waiting out a brief thunderstorm we headed out to the river's edge.  I took a number of photos of the buildings and the environment.  My photos don't do full justice to the property's natural beauty.  I will be returning for early morning photos and as often as possible over our future visits.  If you are in the Yellowstone area this is a must see.  If you are a fly fishing fanatic you must experience these waters.

As we took our photos over several hours there were two evening fly fishing enthusiasts.  It was beautiful to watch them wade the waters and try their luck.  Jack was off in a different area taking his photos and when we reunited to head back to the house he said he was having a hard time concentrating on his photos because he could hear rising fish all around him.

A day

Jack has been fishing every day so I have a lot of private time on my hands.  That's not always a good thing as I can get into trouble...internet shopping...eating snacks...too much web time...crazy dog pics...and much, much, more.  I did do one thing constructive.  I processed a few of my recent photos.  Here's a couple taken with my Nikon.

Reminiscing again

Another look back at our New York State travels.  This  photo  is poorly composed and the lighting was all wrong but the memory is excellent.  We had a terrific day exploring  the area around  the lake.  They have a dinner boat cruise also.  If you're interested in  the  dinner cruise  go to the link I posted  yesterday.  It's was a buffet style dinner and a full bar when we took it  back when.

I've blogged recently that I'm taking an online photography class.  In the process of one of the early assignments, looking at previous photographs to analyze composition and such, I discovered this one.

This is one of a few photos I took while we were in the Fingerlakes of New York State.  This wonderful
patio is overlooking Keuka Lake and I sure would like to be there right now.  This is the time of year
for a number of winery events.  Check out this web link if you are planning to visit the area.  I want to return so I can do a much better job of capturing the beauty of the place.

Man eating plant....just kidding, sort of....

Oregon has a number of nature areas to explore and Darlingtonia Botanical (see previous post here) area is quite interesting.  This photo was taken of the Cobra Lily, purported to eat insects and such.  I have some photos of the viewing site and the details on the plant that I will post separately.  I also have some interesting shots to share that Jack took (much better than mine). Here is one of my shots.

Photography in bad lighting

When the weather won't cooperate for photos of your favorite locations you can still capture good photos for your scrapbook.  Well, I should say I practiced with my camera to have some memory joggers of our time in Florence.  I plan to go back to town and take an exterior photo of Sidestreet Bistro when the lighting is better but here's my photo of one of their gorgeous hanging planters.

This was taken on the porch of the Sidestreet Bistro in Florence, Oregon.  We highly recommend it to anyone visiting this town.  We now have a number of viable options for eating in this small seaside town.

Day trip to Yachats, Oregon

We drove up the coast from the Elks RV parking area to Yachats.  This little town is very low key.  There are one or two touristy shops but it is mostly a coastal residential area.  We drove past the Haceta Head Lighthouse (previously visited and photographed), the seal lion caves and a few federal and state campgrounds. 

While we were sitting in the parking lot watching the local surfers do their thing we noticed a large whale hanging around just off the point.  Every once in a while it would "blow" a stream of water and we watched anxiously hoping it would reveal itself by jumping higher out of the surf.  No luck.  There were a number of folks on the viewing deck observing birds.  We spent a good hour plus just taking in the scene.

It wasn't particularly cold as we watched the surfers but apparently the water was quite cold and one of these folks bundled up in his cozy, plaid bathrobe after leaving the water.

Once again, not the greatest day for photographs but I still want to document the story.
