Another place to explore - Long Beach, WA

Our friends Vee and Dick mentioned the towns of Ilwaco and Long Beach, WA as having some interesting features so I did a web search and found the Discovery Trail.  This looks like a place we would enjoy for walking and photography.

Where the two lanes and old highways take us

We haven't been on the road with the motorhome recently but during some reorganizing I rediscovered two books that will be important for when we're on the move again; Road Trip USA by Jamie Jensen, and Where the Old Roads Go: Southwest, by George Cantor. Both provide some entertaining guidance on routes and places to check out. There could be some updates to these volumes.

Redding and Humboldt County

Being back in California is quite a change.  Jack has always loved this area for it's natural beauty and outstanding fly fishing options.  He hasn't had time to fish for quite a while but this is not the location he had in mind last month.  But just like life in a regular house, sometimes things change and adjustments are needed.  We're not sure of our immediate plans but for the moment we are in one of North America's most beautiful places. 

Humboldt County is in the Redwoods and is quite beautiful.  Unfortunately, it has weather patterns like the Pacific North West..it is the Pacific Northwest being just an hours drive from the coast Oregon border.  Temperatures rarely exceed 70 in the hottest part of the year and it rains quite a lot.  Check out these hot links for further investigation of places like Trinidad, CA.  September and October are the months to travel to this part of California.  If you fish, check out Burney Falls State Park and the Umpqua River in the Roseburg, Oregon areas.  You won't be disappointed.

After looking these resources over or traveling through this region you might ask why we left such a beautiful place.  It's an easy answer, there are many beautiful places to visit and as fulltime RVers we don't have to choose just one place.  While we're here in this area we'll be revisiting places we haven't seen for more than a year.  Then we'll leave for some other beautiful and interesting locale.

A little tourism...and architecture

Our friend John drove us to Virginia City for a little tour of a onetime mining boomtown.  I learned that the proceeds from the ore gleaned out of the Virginia City mines was the seed money for the development of San Francisco.  Life in this area was rough and tumble and a trip to a raucous young city was a welcome change from the Virginia City life of the day.  Now Virginia City is like so many tourist spots we see as we travel along as fulltimers.  Lots of tee shirt shops, fudge shops and saloons.  We had a great casual lunch at the Palace.  The views coming up and down the hillside to visit Virginia City are also worth a trip.

US 95, Alt 50, I80 to Reno

We've arrived at Reno, Nevada and have a comfortable and free spot at one of the local Casinos.  We'll  be investigating the area today with our friend John and should have some pictures in the next day or two.

C O R R E C T I O N:

Just like REAL journalists, from time to time it is necessary to print a correction to an article.  Unlike REAL journalists, I will post this up front and in everyone's face to be certain that the TRUE details are known.  I will, in TRUE journalistic style, blame the whole mess on someone ELSE. 

   

Let it be know to all readers that Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is nowhere near Sanibel Island or Captiva Island.  No, it is near Naples, FL. which is not where we went yesterday.  The previously posted, completely false information was gleaned from the internet so I was mistakenly completely certain that it was correct.  Alas, I was so very wrong.

This glibber will try to be more accurate in future writings.  In the meantime, here is a link to the wildlife preserve we did visit yesterday.  I'll update the journal with a post about Sanibel and the preserve later when I've uploaded photos, etc.  Please stay tuned.

Enjoying the lifestyle

We're staying at a farm near Little Creek, Delaware not far from Dover AFB, DE.  The weather has been mostly cooperative but cool, reminding us that it's time to continue South.  We'll be driving along the coastal roads through Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia to St. Petersburg, Fl for two months.  One of our stops will be Kiptopeke State Park where the viewing of raptors can be notable.  We'll move on down to Myrtle Beach, SC where we'll visit with a woman I shared a house with many decades ago in San Francisco.  We hope to do quite a bit of "birding" as we travel this route and I've learned that the national refuge's have a passport book and provide stamps to commemorate visits to each national refuge.  I'm known to go to heroic measures to obtain stamps and sew on patches (that's a story for another time.)

We're off for a drive to Pennsylvania today to visit with family again.  Seems like we have a lot of family and friends to schedule in and that makes things quite lively.

Hammondsport is a lakeside village on Keuka Lake (Crooked Lake) in the lower Finger Lakes region of New York State.  We spent some time investigating this lake area and enjoyed a very nice seafood dinner at one of the lakeside restaurants with J.P.
